I am a mother of three, who's been married to the father of my children for 12 years. My children adored their grandfather, my father, who died on Mother's Day this year. My mother and father were married December 10, 1964, and raised six children together. Mom never handled the bills, that was always Dad's concern (they were both disabled and on Social Security since the late '70s). We discovered after Dad died that the property my mother knew as her home was only deeded in his name, not Mom's, which would not be a problem if it weren't for the fact that Dad had a lot of debt. We live in Virginia, which is not a community property state, so legally my mother has no claimes to the property until all my father's debts are paid, even though most of the money used to purchase the property was my mother's Social Security. My mother is frantic, worried she will lose her home. I cannot do much to help out right now, since my husband makes very little, even though he is employed fulltime. Any help, legal or otherwise, would be appreciated. I do not want my mother worrying in her golden years. Thank you.
